1. Overview
BillUp (“we”, “us”, “the app”) is an app for writing invoices. It works without a user account, and your invoice data stays on your devices. Only for generating the finished PDF is it briefly transmitted to our backend, where it is not stored (see 3.4). This policy describes what data is created in the app and where it lives.
2. No user account
Using BillUp requires no sign-up. We ask for neither an email address nor a password and create no user profile. We do not know who you are, and the data transmitted for generating a PDF is not tied to any user.
3. Data collection
3.1 Data stored locally
BillUp stores the following data on your device:
- Your company details: name, address, tax number or VAT ID, bank details and logo
- Customer records you create yourself
- Invoices with line items, amounts, tax categories and payment details
- Your invoice number range and the app's settings
- The generated PDF documents
Your records live on the device. We run no database holding your invoices, customers or company details. For generating the PDF, section 3.4 applies.
3.2 iCloud sync
If you are signed in to iCloud on your device, invoices, customers and logo are mirrored to your other devices through your private iCloud. That data sits in your own iCloud storage at Apple and is subject to Apple's privacy policy. We have no access to it. Sync can be turned off in the iOS system settings.
3.3 Files app
BillUp saves finished invoices as PDFs in the “Rechnungen” folder in the Files app. That makes them reachable independently of the app and puts them under your own file and backup management.
3.4 Generating the invoice in the backend
The finished PDF with its embedded XML is not generated on the device but in our backend. When you create an invoice, the app transmits exactly the details that appear on the document:
- your company details including logo, tax number and bank details
- the address and details of the invoice recipient
- the line items with quantities, amounts, tax rates and payment details
We use these details for one purpose only: producing the ZUGFeRD document. The finished PDF goes straight back to your app. After that we keep neither the document nor the transmitted details; no copy of your invoice remains on our server and its content is not analysed. The transmission is encrypted.
Because this step runs in the backend, you need an internet connection to create an invoice.
4. Sending invoices
When you share or send an invoice, it goes through your device's own features, such as Mail or Messages. Delivery does not run through us; the terms of the service you choose apply.
5. In-app purchases
Purchases inside BillUp are handled by the Apple App Store. We receive no payment information from you. Apple processes all transactions under its own privacy policy.
6. Analytics and advertising
BillUp contains no advertising and does not track you across apps and websites. If you have consented on your device to sharing analytics with developers, Apple provides us with aggregated, anonymous figures on crashes and usage. These contain no invoice or customer data and cannot be traced back to you.
7. Deleting your data
You can delete your data in the app at any time. Uninstalling the app removes the locally stored data; data mirrored to iCloud is removed through your device's iCloud settings. PDFs already exported to the Files app remain until you delete them yourself.
8. Retention obligations
Please note that statutory retention periods apply to invoices. Archiving your invoices in an audit-proof way is your own responsibility. BillUp provides the documents as PDFs for that purpose.
9. Your GDPR rights
Because all data lives on your own devices and in your private iCloud, you retain full control: you can view, change, export and delete it at any time. A request for information about data held by us is moot, because we hold none.
10. Changes
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be published on this page.
